How does Sudden Strike 5 differ from Sudden Strike 4?

Everything is bigger and better:

Sudden Strike 5 features a higher unit count and maps up to 4 times larger than the previous game released in 2017. With around 3 times more units at your command, the game gives a more “grander” feeling much like the first 2 games. This is amplified by the extended camera view of Sudden Strike 5, allowing you to zoom in and out even further – for large scale planning & immersive action!

ree

With a focus on dynamic tactical gameplay, Sudden Strike 5 offers less scripted and more sandbox-style missions. There will be various ways to complete a mission as well as a higher level of resource management – use your tactics wisely to reach your goal!

Sudden Strike 5 also adds Doctrine Cards which unlock new abilities, upgrades and units. This offers a deeper customization level, strategic diversity and a rewarding sense of progression throughout the game.

Finally, if things are getting too overwhelming, you can enter the newly added “Tactical Pause” – perfect for issuing new commands and orders or simply taking a break from the battlefield action!

What units are in the game and what are their strengths?

There are 34 unit types, for example transport vehicles, supply & repair vehicles, tanks from various factions, AA, infantry units and more! The maximum size of your faction army that you command will be displayed at the top corner of the screen – this number may vary depending on the individual mission.

Some new additions to Sudden Strike 5 include armored trains featured in specific missions like the “Panzerzug 21”, the Fighter Aircraft “Hawker Hurricane  Mk IIA”, the Heavy Assault Gun “Sturmtiger”, the Heavy Tank Destroyer “Jagdtiger”, the Amphibious Tank “T-37A” and the Medium Tank “Panther G”.

As there are various unit types, we focus on the strengths of the most important ones:

Armored trains, like the Panzerzug 21, can use their canons, transport troops and vehicles, and are centered on the mission objectives. They also allow for back & forth travel.

Air support offers diverse types of planes including the newly added Fighter aircrafts, like the Messerschmitt Bf 109. Those excel in anti-air combat and patrol the designated area, engaging enemy air units within their engagement range. They do not target ground units – this task is done by the Tactical and Level Bombers.

Infantry units are the most mobile units and best used for reconnaissance. They are able to conceal in vegetation or lay prone to improve combat efficiency. Infantry can come with specialized equipment and weapons. Specialists include: Medic (healing infantry), Anti-tank (damaging enemy armored vehicles), Submachine gunner (anti-infantry), Sniper (Long-range anti-infantry) and much more!

ree

With high-powered cannons and strong armor, tanks like the Panzer III J are the most significant threats on the battlefield. Anti-tank units are especially good at damaging armored vehicles. Through Doctrines, Tanks can use special commands from the command panel to

increase their damage and/or defense capabilities.

Artillery, like the 75mm Pak 40 – Anti-Tank Gun, can be towed around the map and used against the enemy or fortified into defensive positions.

Transport vehicles, like the Kettenkrad, transport infantry units faster and safer to a destination point and also help towing cannons. Some will be amphibious, some will have high capacity.

Can I control groups of units in Sudden Strike 5?

Yes, you can control groups of units in Sudden Strike 5. Especially when having a large amount of units (the maximum size of your army is displayed at the top corner in each mission), the control groups allow you to create groups of units that can be selected easily. You will be able to remove or add specific units to a group of units.

Through this feature you can command specific groups for specific purposes. For example, stronger units can be assigned to the front line while a group of supply and repair units follows at the back.

How does the environment play a role in Sudden Strike 5?

Each mission of Sudden Strike 5 features different historical locations across Europe and North Africa featuring different environments.

Bridges can be destroyed by artillery or bombers, cutting the enemy’s reinforcement lines.

As rivers often play a key role in missions, civilian boats are important for infantry transportation. A specific unit will be able to create a pontoon anywhere the terrain allows it.

Find the right spot to cross with a pontoon and flank the enemy or shorten your way to a destination point.

Are there different ways to complete a mission in Sudden Strike 5?

Yes, there are different ways to complete a mission in Sudden Strike 5. Thanks to the sandbox-style of the missions, you can take different routes and apply various tactics to reach your goal. There are also secondary objectives and points of interest – if you reach and capture these, it will give you strategic advantages like air support and supply depots. For example, capturing checkpoints at the edge of the map prevents enemy reinforcements coming from outside the map.

The final objective remains the same but the path to this objective is decided by YOUR actions!

What are the Prestige Points in Sudden Strike 5?

Prestige Points are used in Sudden Strike 5 to get reinforcement units or air support.

They are earned through different ways during a mission:

  • Completing secondary objectives

  • Capturing some specific points of interest (visible on the minimap: red = not captured yet; blue = successfully captured)

  • Capturing Resource Points which mine Prestige Points automatically

These Prestige Points can then be used to buy reinforcements during the mission.

Captured radar stations or airfields unlock air support and supply, while captured enemy checkpoints or train stations allow reinforcements delivered via train or road.

But beware – the enemy can reinforce their army too!

Are supplies important in Sudden Strike 5?

Managing fuel and ammo will be key in Sudden Strike 5 – even more so now, as the maps and unit count will be larger than in Sudden Strike 4.

To ensure your units have enough fuel and ammo to move on to the objective, you could either stop by at a captured supply depot or use supply vehicles.

Repair vehicles will automatically repair any vehicle that needs to be repaired and is in range.

How long does it take to complete the campaign of Sudden Strike 5?

Depending on the playstyle and the approaches you take during the missions, the estimated playtime for the single-player campaign with its 25 missions lies at around 25 hours.

You can also play through missions multiple times, as each mission can play out differently depending on your choice of tactics & approaches, doctrine cards and commander.

ree
